Type of Course: Elective
Semester: Spring

Instructor: Emeritus Professor E. Gidarakos

Recommended Reading:

  • Hughes W. William (1996) «Essentials of Environmental Toxicology – The effects of Environmentally Hazardous Substances on Human Health», Taylor and Francis
  • Rand G.M., 1995: Fundamentals of aquatic toxicology: effects, environmental fate, and risk assessment, Sec. Edn, Taylor & Francis.
  • Vallero A. Daniel (2003) «Engineering the Risks of Hazardous Wastes», Butterworth – Heineman.

Eclass:

  • Registration required

Course objectives:

Environmental Toxicology studies the exposure, the toxicokinetic and toxicodynamic changes, and the negative impact of synthetic chemicals and hazardous and non- hazardous factors on living organisms of environmental compartments. The course aims to familiarize students with the meaning and scope of environmental toxicology, as this is a very important tool of environmental engineering. Through the presentation and explanation of key definitions and toxicity indicators, analysis of significant examples and implementation of tutorial and lab exercises, students will be able n acquire the basic knowledge of the subject and understand its necessity in any attempt environmental assessment and protection.

Course contents:

1st Week Definition and types of toxicology - definition environmental toxicology - examples of environmental toxicology problems .
2nd Week Environmental pollutants and their fate in different environmental media
3rd Week Toxicology concepts- categorization of toxicity / toxicity mechanisms and indicators
4th Week Principles and concepts of toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics
5th Week Hazard identification – risk - risk assessment analysis
